What Parents Need to Talk about with Sex & Consent
/I was interviewed for a new podcast called Our Bird Has Flown, about how couples can transition after their last or only child leaves the home. This is a unique phase of life for many married couples. While we do address a bit about what to do about sex and intimacy in this transitional time period, we really delved into how to prepare your kids to be responsible around sexual consent. I gave a lot of pushback to host Paul Bowers about seemingly caring more about the rare young man who is falsely accused of sexual assault, versus all the young women who often experience sexual coercion. It was a heated conversation!
The wide-ranging conversation included:
The familial and societal impacts on our sexuality
How couples can start talking about sex and intimacy once the kids are out of the house
The importance of creating a new version of sex as you age
The differences in socialization between girls and boys
Issues around consent for teen girls
Fear of teen boys being falsely accused of abuse
Three things young men should do for healthy, sexually active relationships
