Sexual Consent Talk on College Campuses
/Grab 'em by the What?! Sex, Consent, & American Values
I'm so pleased and appreciative that San Diego State University is hosting my first college talk specifically on sexual consent! As the title indicates, we have some cultural values that support and even promote sexual coercion. Sexual hook-ups in the United States are rife with misunderstandings and miscommunication around consent. My talk is about how we can shift from a culture of coercion, to a culture of consent. It's all about the gray areas.
Using my own sexual consent violation as an example, I discuss how and why sexual coercion is built into the fabric of so many sexual interactions. In my interactive presentation, I guide college students through the experience of critical thinking, mindfulness, and compassion, and how cultivating these can help us all find our voice, respect for others, and develop new campus social norms. I want to speak to college students so they can create a new, healthy narrative around sexual consent, and support each other in this process.
