Guy Jerking Off to Woman Hula Hooping??

hulahooping.jpg

Have you noticed that hula hooping has made a come-back recently? Or maybe this is just in Southern California?

Regardless, I got a phone message from a good friend the other day who was excitedly trying out new hula moves in the middle of the day in a local park. She really enjoys hula hooping for the challenge, exercise, fun, and dance aspect. She was "hooping like a mad woman...and totally rocking out" when she got a weird vibe and stopped to walk to her car to make a phone call. She looked up and 30 feet away is a man exposing his penis and masturbating while staring at her. She started honking her car horn but he continued. Finally he got up and jogged away. She saw some humor in the situation, but was also freaked out. How can you not feel a bit violated in such a situation?

Her story reminded me of when I was just out of college, walking at night in Georgetown while visiting Washington, D.C., for a sociology conference. A man was parked on the side of the road, blatantly whacking off in the driver's seat, and arching his back so that he penis was even more obvious. My female friend and I were alarmed and walked by quickly, not looking back. He drove to the next block and parked, waiting for us to walk by again. I was terrified, so we turned around and caught a cab.

I brought this topic up to some friends today while playing beach volleyball (somehow the topic of sex seems to come up everywhere I go :). A woman shared her experience of this happening to her when she was 12 and again when she was 13. She didn't tell anyone the first time, because she was embarrassed. That struck a cord with me. If we discussed the topic of sex, critical thinking, and boundaries openly and honestly with children, there would be no shame in telling others what she had been exposed to.

Anyone else have similar experiences? I don't know much about the psychological intent or motivation behind these public masturbation episodes. It does seem that the man is aroused not just by watching women/girls, but by being seen and frightening the women/girls. Perhaps there is arousal is getting caught as well as a sense of power and control in scaring someone with their act. Fascinating.

The Bater

So.. My first mental picture the morning after "the incident" was the vision of the man... I have barely hooped, and have noticed my tense feeling around any male putting their hands near their genitals. It freaked me out more than I wish. My energy barrier was nudged, and am sure I will feel less anxious soon. So to my fellow hoopers, let's hoop in packs, stay sexy and keep an eye out behind ya!

Thanks for "Day After" Comments

Hey, Conscious1~
Thanks so much for sharing your feelings since the hula hooping/jerking off incident last week. I'm so sorry he's taken away the joy and freedom around hula hooping for you :( Definitely stay sexy!

where do they "get off" doing that?

I spent a semester in London in college and was on The Tube one day at rush hr. I was standing up against the glass partition behind the seats near the doors. The train was packed and the guy an inch away from me started rubbing up against me. When I realized what he was doing, I said, "EXCUSE ME!?" several times and when I got no response I started trying to push him away and I remember my arm sinking into his stomach to no avail. I remember the anxiety and panic of feeling trapped and completely helpless and in the midst of a crowd (!) and no one was helping me (if anyone even realized...in our own little walkman worlds). As soon as the train stopped I got off and on a different car, sure he was following me, but he hadn't. I went home and told a male housemate about it and said, "where do men get off thinking they can do that shit to women....no pun intended!?" This incident, amongst other similar violations on the part of men and our society's attitude toward women, have left me, 20 years later, still struggling w/ issues of male privilege and dominance, etc. not to mention self esteem, body image and myself as a sexual being. I have no idea what motivates men to do these things, but I do think society generally just plays along, if you know what I mean. It's starting to change a bit, but we still have a long way to go. I appreciate what I've seen so far of your website, thanks! PS...I started hooping on my 40th b-day about 6 mos. ago! I love it and it DOES help w/ feeling sexier. I'll definitely stick to doing it in packs though.

on behalf of my gender, i apologize!

... but think about this.... quite a few straight males who go to prison end up raping other males who they (i presume) have no attraction to. i'm almost certain they'd have sex with animals if they were in the same prison. so, when out & about in the real world, if a guy is a bit of a freak and thus (like me!) single, doing crappy things like this doesn't surprise me. i'm sorry to all you women out there that we men are a bit messed up in a few ways. :)

ps. i've never been in prison...

I seriously wonder what

I seriously wonder what would have happened if a woman would smile and wave if she caught a man jerking off in front of her.

Granted, I don't think I would be the one to complete the experiment, I would probably run away. While I think masturbation is great- the part that freaks me out, is that there has to be something weird in your head that bypasses all the "this is socially unacceptable" signals and you can actually do it.

Most guys I've talked to would feel so vunerable being naked in public, they couldn't get an erection..much less masturbate in front of a stranger...so the guys that do it, obviously have something going on, and that's alarming.
